Maine Agro-Forestry Initiative

Agroforestry combines agriculture and forestry technologies to create more integrated, diverse, productive, profitable, healthy and sustainable land-use systems. It focuses on meeting the economic, environmental and social needs of people on their private lands.
The State Agroforestry Group is a loosely formed group of interested conservation agencies, organizations and consulting foresters that provides conferences and workshops to educate and promote agroforestry and sustainable forestry to landowners and private consulting foresters in Maine.
The main purpose of these educational events is to make landowners aware of business opportunities for non-timber forest products, including ginseng, mushrooms, floral plants, medicinal plants, maple syrup, alder flower pots, balsam fir bags and spruce gum.
Conference and workshop topics have also included:
- Ecotourism
- Recreational trails
- Woodland ecology
- Medicinal plants
- Sustainable woodlot management
- Forest land taxation
- Federal and state cost-share technical and financial assistance programs
- Conservation easements
- Marketing non-timber forest products
