KNEADING
Conference 2009
July 30 & July 31,
Skowhegan, Maine
Trade Show Day and Local Bread Fair August 1st.
A hands-on immersion in making and baking bread,
building wood-fired ovens
and cultivating local grains.

The KNEADING Conference invites professional and home bakers, farmers and millers, oven builders and interested community members to participate in hands-on demonstrations and lectures on progressive ideas in the art of wood-fired bread baking, local grain growing, milling and oven building.
The conference celebrates and inspires growing and milling grain close to home for bread baked in wood-fired ovens as a way to bring food production to a smaller circle that will foster sustainable soils, local economies and vibrant, healthy communities.
This year, topics will include:
- how to build your own portable oven,
- how to maximize your baking productivity in one firing,
- basic techniques for artisan bread baking at home,
- baking low cost simple flat breads,
- organic wheat cultivation in Maine, and much more.
We are excited to feature a free pizza making workshop for children this year!
Several portable wood-fired ovens will convene at the conference site to allow participants to explore first-hand the possibilities of wood-fired baking, a tradition that creates superior hand-crafted breads. These breads will complement the wonderful snacks and meals made from local fresh harvests that will be enjoyed by conference participants.
Conference meals this year will feature natural and organic local food catered by Billi Barker from Firefly Farm.
New this year! The success of the first two conferences has made possible a new event: the Trade Show Day and Local Bread Fair on Saturday, August 1st, from 10am to 5pm. This will be an opportunity to experience bread made and baked in wood fired ovens, purchase bread from vendors, purchase complementary baking tools, apparel, handcrafted cheeses, and baking equipment and learn about other organizations involved in the effort to spread the desire for locally produced bread made from locally cultivated grains.
